Kickoff Classic Results
It’s not how you start… it’s how you finish. The 2010 season got
under way Saturday under beautiful skies as 55 GCNJers kicked off
the club’s 14th season of competition and some finished
just where they left off.
After a long Winter of golf dreaming, Dennis Appelt’s game
showed no signs of rust as he took home the Kickoff Classic title
for the second time in three years. Appelt, starting on number 14,
played some steady bogey-golf thru the first 9 holes, realizing that
his biggest opponent that day was likely his playing partner Drew
Murphy. Dennis would make the turn at 6-over than reel off a string
of pars. Murphy on the other hand, also started strong playing his
first nine in 3-over par, including a birdie at the tricky par-4
fourth. While Murphy too would start his back nine with pars, both
he and Appelt struggled thru holes 9 and 10, both carding doubles at
the difficult ninth, while Appelt would also double the tiebreaker
hole number 10 and allow the field to inch closer. With 3 holes to
play, Appelt and Murphy went in different directions as Dennis would
finish birdie-par-par for 82-13=69 and Drew bogey-bogey-bogey for
82-10=72 to separate themselves from each other. New member and good
guy Frank Ennis was also in the mix. Frank, starting on number 10,
fired a very tidy 42 on the back nine, yet started the second nine
with back-to-back doubles. Remaining calm over the next few holes,
Frank would come undone late in the round with two more double
bogeys on his 15th and 16th holes and his
score of 88-17=71 would leave him one shot shy of victory in his
inaugural GCNJ event. Finally GCNJ veteran Bob Perugini also made a
run. Perugini played steadily throughout the round; however, a
double-bogey, quad start to his second nine and a double at his
final hole left him at 101-30=71 and a shot shy as well. Congrats
once again to Mr. Appelt and be on the lookout, last year was no
fluke… the Appelt’s are back!!
On the gross side, Dave Formichella, looking to rebound from a
horrific 2009 season, defended his Kickoff Classic title but as
always… winning’s not easy. Grinding all day to keep the big numbers
off the card worked for awhile but as often the case, thinking ahead
backfired and Formichella would double both 16 and 17 to post a
40-40=80. Guest Larry Neville played steady on the front, posting 5
pars and a birdie for 38; however, bogeys at 10 and 11 would turn a
good round into an okay round and a late double at 16 would cost him
a chance at victory. Drew Murphy had it going as well and seemed
poised for victory; however, he too would finish poorly playing the
final 6 holes 7-over par. Finally, Harry VanDezilver would contend
and although Harry finished his round strong, a 6-over par stretch
mid-round proved costly.
