Atlantic City Open Results

You don’t have to play your best… only better than everyone else. While lowered temperatures and blistering winds “slumped the shoulders” of many participants at Sunday’s Atlantic City Open, someone had to win and that someone was Padraig Arnotte. On a day when the best net’s were over-par it was anyone’s chance to take home the hardware. Arnotte got off to a good start earning points on most holes thru the front nine; however, a quad on his 9th hole derailed the Phillie fanatic for a bit. The Originals Rick Wheaton and Jack O’Brien from the Jackson Fore would start ok as well, scattering in some brilliance with some big numbers, while contender Jon Needham got off to a shaky, but, acceptable outward nine. As the winds freshened, many players felt their chances dwindle with each bogey but for the contenders their strong resolve at the end would determine the day’s winner. While O’Brien played steadily most of the way, a birdie at his 17th hole could not make up for the zero points earned over the previous 3 holes and Jack would finish 1-point back. Needham would play very well down the stretch, earning 10 points over the final 7 holes; however, a double at the last would leave him one back as well. With both Arnotte and Wheaton remaining and both players playing steadily throughout the day, the difference would come down to who could keep the big numbers off the card. While Rick would make a rare birdie on the difficult 16th, a late quad on his third to last hole combined with a “minus-1” 8 on the tiebreaker 10th hole and it was Arnotte's to finish off if he could handle the conditions over his closing holes. With 10 points over his last 7 holes and no big numbers on the way in, Arnotte, via the 10th hole tiebreaker, would sneak away with his first victory of the year at “even” points for the day. Congrats to all the contenders on some topshelf golf in difficult conditions.
On the gross side, new member Pat Driscoll posted a steady 39-40=79 to outlast Kyle Ross and PJ Halas and take home the 2010 AC Open title. Driscoll, who walked to stay warm, posted 10 pars and kept big numbers off the card; however, bogeys on his final 3 holes opened the door for Halas. PJ, having reeled off 6 pars in his last 7 holes, would bogey the last, the difficult 9th, and finish one back. Jon Needham also contended in the gross firing 45-38=83 and posed the best back-nine score of the day.
In other news, GCNJ Match-Play qualifier #2 is complete and 14 more players advanced with a qualifying score of 76 or better. The final 28 spots will be filled this weekend and pairings will be set next week.
